Frequently asked questions

What are signet rings?

Signet rings are one of the oldest styles of jewellery out there, and while they were once called the ‘gentleman’s ring’, they’re now a firm favourite for all genders. Historically, the face of the ring was engraved with a unique design and pressed into hot wax to authenticate letters. These days, they’re worn purely for fashion and self-expression.

At William May, we've got a wide variety to choose from, including plain polished faces and more luxurious options like our diamond signet rings or deep black onyx signet rings. They’re also a great alternative to a plain wedding band if you want something with a bit more weight and personality.

What colours do signet rings come in?

Our collection features a variety of metals to suit your taste and your budget:

  • Yellow gold – This is the most traditional choice, available in various purities ranging from 9ct to 14ct and 18ct.
  • White gold – A great modern twist that gives you a bright, silvery finish with all the lustre of gold.
  • Sterling silver – A high-shine, durable option that’s perfect for everyday wear at a more accessible price point.
  • Gemstone accents – If you want added character, we also stock designs featuring diamonds, cubic zirconia, and onyx for a pop of colour.

Why do people wear signet rings?

While we aren't sealing many envelopes with wax these days, people still love signet rings for their customisability potential and fun details. Many choose to wear them to show off a family crest or unique monogram, creating a piece of jewellery that’s completely one-of-a-kind. They’ve also become a staple in men’s everyday fashion because they’re so easy to wear and add an instant ‘cool’ factor to any outfit.

What finger are signet rings worn on?

In the past, signet rings were almost always worn on the pinky finger of the non-dominant hand. This made it easy for the wearer to reach down and press the ring into wax. Nowadays, there aren't any strict rules.

While the pinky is still the most traditional spot, we also see plenty of people wearing them on their ring or middle fingers, or even as part of a stacked look with other rings.
