Are you looking for fashion to accessorise your retro jewellery purchases? We asked leading vintage clothes brand Pop Boutique for their top five tips for buying authentic retro fashion.

Know your measurements!

Just like knowing your ring size before buying a ring online, when purchasing retro fashion, know your waist, chest, neck and inside leg sizes as you can’t expect vintage fashion to match today’s standard UK fashion sizes. High Street sizes have changed over the decades, so a size 12 in the 1970s would be more like a size 8 today, while fashion items from brands in the US or Asia will be completely different from our standard sizes.

Try before you Buy

Not just to check that something fits, but to see how it looks on you. The beauty of buying vintage clothing is that it can look completely different on your body to how it looks on the hanger, or on-screen. Be adventurous, experiment and try out different styles to mix up your look.

Look at Alterations

If you find an amazing print but the dress or shirt is too big for you, there’s always the opportunity to get it altered – and you’ll end up with a piece of clothing that is practically bespoke to you – what’s not to like?

Take care of your clothes

Have a good look at any labels to see how best to wash and care for your vintage purchase. Many fabrics made 40 years ago simply can’t cope with a standard wash and tumble dry. If in doubt, hand wash or dry clean.

Don’t forget to accessorise!

You don’t need to dress head to toe in vintage to get the look. Sometimes just one statement vintage piece is enough to create a great retro vibe. Maybe an ‘80s handbag, a psychedelic scarf from the early ‘70s, or an amazing pair of shoes. And of course, don’t forget your jewellery!
