Although most chains are unisex there are a few designs and link shapes we know are significantly more popular with men. Our thorough guide takes you through the most popular chain necklaces for men and how to style them. Whether you’re looking for something a little bit more trendy or leaning on the classic side we’ll help you find the right chain and link shape to suit your style.

Stars & Bars Chain

The stars and bars chain is very eye-catching for a chain. The links have ornate chunky links with stars and bars patterned on the links. These make stylish necklaces or bracelets. As it’s quite a statement chain we recommend you wear them as standalone chain rather than layering them so that all the focus is on the detail of the links.

Connell Chains

The most popular menswear chain of the last couple of years is what has become known as a Connell chain. It is actually a silver curb chain with small links and is perfect if you’re new to men's jewellery. It’s a bit more discrete than something like stars and bars or the heavy flat curb chains. If you want to get a similar style we’d recommended a curb chain that’s 20 inches long and 2-3mm wide.

Square Curb Chains

Although curb chains are fairly unisex we get lots of requests for very thick set flat curb chains. These are known as square curb chains or flat curb chains. The links are very flat but fairly chunky and usually diamond cut so that the links are more polished and shiny. The way they interconnect means that the chain lies flat against you but there is still flexibility between the links. The thickness of these chains also makes them very durable so if you want something sturdy you can wear every day this is a great choice.

Cuban Link Chains

Cuban chains are a classic chain that’s been around since the 1970s and sometimes they are known as Miami chain. Since their inception Cuban chains have become a staple of menswear jewellery that’s highly coveted. What makes the Cuban chain stand out is the weight of the bracelet or necklace. The space between the links is very tight and the look is off continuous links very neatly interlocked together.

This technique requires a lot more metal compared to other chains, making them relatively expensive and so Cuban chains are often worn as a status symbol.

What’s the difference between a Flat Curb chain and a Cuban chain?

We often get asked what’s the difference between a flat curb chain and a Cuban chain. The curb chains are slightly softer in appearance as the links aren’t quite as rigid and compact together. This means that curb chains also use a lot less metal. Between a Cuban chain and a Flat curb chain, there could be 50% less metal in the flat curb chain vs the Cuban chain. Not only can this lighter weight be more comfortable for some people it also means that this similar look is much more affordable than a Cuban chain.

What Unisex Chains are Popular for Mens Jewellery?

While a lot of chain styles are considered unisex, we know there are some which are favoured in men's jewellery.

From the traditional Figaro chain to the contemporary bead and ball, although these chains are worn by either men or women, depending on the link gauge and how you style them, a chain can lean more towards a masculine look.
