At William May, we have been specialising in gold chains since 1825, so we know a thing or two about buying an investment gold chain and how they appreciate in value. Not only do we want to guide you through the different styles of chain links but what to look for in an investment gold chain.

If you are thinking of buying a gold chain as an investment piece the first thing we recommend is opting for a solid gold chain over a hollow gold chain. Both solid and hollow chains each have their merits but if you are thinking of buying an investment piece, we would always recommend a solid link chain. Solid chains are much stronger than hollow chains and over time they are less likely to need any maintenance or repairs as they are less likely to break.

Is it better to Invest in a New or a Pre-Owned Chain?

One of the most popular questions we get from buyers is whether to invest in a new or a pre-owned chain. When it comes to new versus pre-owned gold chains there are lots of different pros and cons depending on the reason you are buying a chain and your budget. Between two similar chains, one pre-owned and the other new, usually the pre-owned chain will offer more value for money than the new chain.

This means if you are buying a gold chain as an investment, then pre-owned chains can make a great choice. A chain of the same weight will be considerably cheaper pre-owned than the cost of the same chain if it were new. Instead of buying a new 6mm chain of a particular weight, you could opt to buy a thicker or weightier chain, such as a 10mm chain of a heavier weight for the same cost if it were pre-owned. Over time this can mean a significant difference in the appreciation value.

Do Gold Chains Hold Their Value?

Gold chains are likely to hold their value, unlike other precious metals the demand for gold has not significantly fluctuated. In fact, the value of gold has steadily risen over time. As the value of gold chains is closely tied to the price of gold, if you are buying a gold chain as an investment, we recommend buying a chain with at least 14ct as this has a higher gold purity than 9ct. However, 9ct gold chains still look great and provide affordable options for all budgets.

Are Gold Chains a Good Investment?

Obviously nothing in life is guaranteed but gold chains can be a great investment and are a wonderful piece of jewellery. Some jewellery prices fluctuate with trends, such as certain styles of engagement rings or colour gemstones. Although these types of jewellery still hold great value there are certain times they are more popular due to fashion trends. As gold chains are timeless in style, they make great investment pieces, they are not often trend-led.

Do Gold Chains Appreciate in Value?

It is important to keep in mind that gold chains usually appreciate in value but over a long period of time, such as thirty years. Gold chains are less influenced by short term trends, so good maintenance and patience is required for the long-term market.

Gold chains are a timeless piece of jewellery and have been shown to hold their value over time. At William May we have hundreds of chains, both new and pre-owned, to suit every style and budget.
