April is a month of joke’s and ‘fools’, of Easter and the part of spring where flowers start bursting into life and colour. But April is arguably the most special month of the year because of its birthstone – the diamond. A diamond is the traditional April birthstone, and is thought to represent eternal love, strength, courage and health.

Throughout history, birthstones were believed to contain magical properties. And wearing diamonds, specifically, was thought to bring balance and clarity to the wearer. Additionally, when paired with amethyst, it was believed that diamonds could boost energy. So they probably had no need for coffee back then!

Back in 1330, diamond cutting was prevalent in Venice and this is still a common occurrence in the city of love and gondolas to this day. But it wasn’t until the 15th Century when the diamond trade really began to flourish, as the Eastern trade routes started to open.

Nowadays, however, diamonds are often given as gifts in the form of jewellery, and giving someone a piece of jewellery specific to their birth month is always a very special and thoughtful present. And diamond set pieces are perfect for all occasions, given how tough they are. So if you know someone who has a birthday in April, you’re in luck as here at William May we have a huge variety of diamond jewellery available.

April babies are incredibly fortunate to have the diamond as their birthstone. Natural diamonds are rare and very unique – and thought to be one of the hardest materials in the world. Over the years, it has been identified as the ‘stone of immortality’ which is possibly the reason behind the phrase ‘diamonds are forever’.

Ancient folk believed that diamonds could cure illnesses and could draw out poisons and toxins from the body. Therefore, in the Middle Ages, many people would take a heated diamond to bed with them in the hope that it would cure their ailments and get rid of any harmful elements in the body.

In Ancient Greece, they had many fantastical and magical theories regarding the origins of diamonds. For example, some people of the time believed that diamonds were shards of shooting stars that had fallen to the earth; others thought they were crystallized lightning, solidified dew drops or even the tears of the Gods. The exact origin of diamonds is still something of a mystery to us even now – so who knows – maybe they are fragments of stars or preserved lightning! It’s not exactly a scientific belief but it is a gorgeous image.

We do know, however, that diamonds are made of pure carbon and the atoms are arranged in a special way to create the sparkling stone.

Despite the widespread belief that all diamonds are white or colourless, there are actually diamonds of many different colours. From greys and whites to more vibrant colours such as green, pink and red, diamonds come in many shades – but a lemon yellow is the most common of the colours. The colour is formed due to the impurities in the stone. For example, yellow diamonds contain a small amount of nitrogen whereas blue contains traces of boron.

Since diamonds have such a fabulous reputation and are always incredibly popular, April’s birthstone is known as the ‘King of all Birthstones’, which kind of makes April babies royalty…
