Well, January is well and truly upon us – and it really is the beginning of a wonderful season for jewellery. Yes, this time of year isn’t just about darker nights, woolly jumpers, icy roads and hot chocolate – it’s also awards season.

The season kicked off with the Golden Globes and there are many more ceremonies coming up – including the BAFTA’s and the Academy Awards! Our favourite celebrities will be giving empowering speeches, we’ll find out who gave an award-winning performance in the past year and, of course, which celebrities are 2018’s best dressed. And, as we all know, the most important part of an outfit is the jewels.

It was duly noted that emeralds were a popular choice at the Golden Globes this year. This, it appears, was a second nod to the ‘Times Up’ campaign which aims to make a stand against sexual assault, harassment and inequality for women in all kinds of workplaces. This movement saw the vast majority of the attendees wearing black. But also it saw … emeralds. Emeralds are associated with divine feminine power and have been connected to Goddesses like Venus and Umina since ancient times. Emerald green was also a special colour of the suffragette movement.

Consequently, an array of celebrities selected the green stone as their accessory of choice, including Catherine Zeta-Jones in a fabulous pair of emerald chandelier earrings, Issa Rae with an incredible emerald pendant necklace and Zoe Kravitz with a striking statement pair of emerald drop earrings.

Emeralds, of course, have always been popular during awards season. From Angelina Jolie’s dainty emerald drop earrings at last year’s Oscars to the illustrious emerald encrusted necklace, bracelet and earring set worn by Elizabeth Taylor at the 1966 Academy Awards. It seems green has always been a favourite in fashion - particularly where precious stones are concerned. But it really was wonderful to see a fashion statement become a meaningful statement of solidarity and change.

You can see William May’s selection of emeralds here.

Not everyone wore emeralds, however, and many people stuck to the first and original girl’s best friend: diamonds.

Angelina Jolie traded her dainty emeralds for a pair of exquisite, pear-shaped, diamond drop earrings. Thirteen Reasons Why’s Katherine Langford also opted for diamond drop earrings as well as diamond star-shaped hair pins. And Viola Davis took our breath away in a beautifully chaotic necklace of white diamonds in platinum.

Diamonds during awards season is a must. Both Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly were fond of diamonds and both of them fashioned diamond and pearl drop earrings during their Oscar wins (1954 and 1955).

But pearls don’t always need a diamond to support them, as we all know. Sienna Miller took it upon herself to prove this at last year’s Golden Globes with a beautiful set of glossy pearls - a necklace, bracelet and ring.

But nobody rocked pearls quite like Lupita Nyong’o at the 2015 Oscars. She stepped onto the red carpet draped head to foot in pearls – in a dress comprised almost entirely of them! But if you don’t feel the need to be quite as fabulous as Lupita and cover yourself in the shiny jewel, a pearl necklace or accessory goes a long way.

So, even if you don’t have a red carpet event lined up, you can find the perfect set of jewellery in one of our stores or online. After all, you don’t need to attend a ceremony to look award-winning.
