From the grunts of the players as they rally their opponents to the cheers of the crowd in congratulations, today is the day we wave our racquets goodbye to, arguably, the most riveting three weeks in sport. There were shocks from Andy Murray admitting defeat by American, Sam Querrey and to, Garbiñe Muguruza and Roger Federer winning the trophy, respectively, for singles-champion at Wimbledon. Though there was no shortage of phenomenal tennis, it is always hard to overlook how the player’s style their strict dress-code of all white. There is nothing like hearing the roar of the players as they valiantly rally their way to a hopeful victory juxtaposed with the stillness and organized cheers of the crowds. Wimbledon is host to some of the best athletes in the world, and with the best sense of style to boot.

Chris Evert, an American tennis powerhouse and eighteen-time grand slam singles winner, including 3 Wimbledon championships, revolutionized the fashion of accessorising on the court. Evert is known as the ‘ice maiden’ which attested to her competitive stance and ferocious demeanour during matches as well as her being a young woman in the sport-hence the term maiden.

However, that is not all that the ‘ice maiden’ is known for. With her two-handed backhand in full force during a 1987 U.S. Open final, Evert made for a uniquely legendary match and changed the game of jewellery forever.

Amidst an intense rally, Evert halted the match mid-action-because of her George Bedewi bracelet. At this time it was called an eternity bracelet, where diamonds circled the perimeters of the wrist on a flexible band, but unfortunately, before it gained popularity because of Evert, it was not the most secure. Her thin bracelet flung off into mid-air diamonds first and she called quits on the game until it was found. Luckily, after a search through the crowd, Evert’s bracelet was recovered and the game continued, but this bracelet has never been the same.

We have Evert to thank for the famed tennis bracelet’s success, and the likes of Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova continue to sport this classic piece. It has grown to be a classic piece in every woman’s wardrobe; tennis bracelets make for a thoughtful and exquisite gift and is perfect every day wear taking you from the office to a night out to a game of tennis-though, luckily, jewellers have perfected the clasp so no more slip ups, or offs shall we say!
