The clocks have gone back, the nights are longer and the weather is becoming colder and colder… which means November is here. So with a new month, comes a different birthstone for us to discuss and in this case, two gemstones, Citrine and Topaz.

The two gemstones differ in appearance, meaning and value which gives November a burst of different colours and feelings.

Citrine & its appearance

Citrine can be found in a variety of shades, ranging from pastel yellow to a dark brownish orange depending the process. The Citrine gemstone is mostly formed by treating the purple stone Amethyst with heat but can also be created from heat-treating smoky quartz too.

Of course there is a natural form of Citrine which usually comes in a yellow to orange-yellow colour but is extremely rare to come across. In comparison to the heat-treated Citrine, the natural stone does not obtain the reddish-brown tint, which makes its more valuable.

The largest quantity of Citrine is produced in Brazil, although many other countries such as, Argentina, Spain and Russia are also producers of the stone.

Citrine is also known to be one of the most affordable gemstones due such a high quantity being produced, although this fact does not take away the beauty of the stone.

Citrine & its meaning

The name of the stone originates the term ‘citron fruit’ due to the similarity of the yellow colouring of a lemon, and in various languages lemon can mean ‘citron’.

For those who use gemstones in spiritual activities, Citrine is known for its powerful cleaner and regenerator for the body.

Although we know that Citrine is celebrated as one of November’s birthstone, Citrine is also considered to be the stone of celebration in aid of a 13th wedding anniversary. This could be the perfect idea for a wedding anniversary gift and would show incredible thought and sentiment.

Topaz & its appearance

Topaz comes in a wide variety of colours, although pure topaz is colourless and transparent, the majority of the time the topaz is tinted by impurities to give the stone its colour.

There are a wide array of colours available for the Topaz stone, such as:

  • Wine Red
  • Pale Grey
  • Yellow
  • Reddish-Orange
  • Blue-Brown
  • White
  • Pale Green
  • Blue
  • Gold
  • Pink (Rare)
  • Reddish-Yellow
  • Opaque
  • Transparent

The highest value of Topaz starts from the elegance of the deep red, dwindling down to pink, then to orange to yellow. The lowest value of Topaz are the blue topazes and the colourless gems, but although they are stated as the least valuable, they are still a spectacular style of gemstone.

Topaz, the stone itself is pleochroic, which means that the gemstone can show different colours in different crystal directions.

Topaz & its meaning

Topaz is believed to mean a significant amount in the eyes of spiritualists, for example this stone is known for its balancing effect on human emotions and the calming tendencies the stone has on others. The stone is also known to release tension, balance emotions and can bring joy to those who bare the stone. Another interesting fact about the stone is that Orange Topaz, is also known as precious Topaz and the stone stands for the symbol of friendship.

In respects to the celebration of wedding anniversaries, Topaz is used to celebrate the 4th wedding anniversary. Again, with the incredible amount of colours Topaz has to offer, a stunning Topaz gift would be a precious gift for that special day.
