Our jewellery boxes are overflowing with treasured gems that we rarely wear together, but there is no reason why you can’t create an amazing look with multiple minerals and metals.

The metals that we use for jewellery consist of a unique palette of colours that complement and contrast with one another when worn at the same time. However, these interesting colours will never have the chance to shine if we don’t mix them up.

Nobody has ever said, “I can’t buy that, I have enough jewellery already!” so why should we stick to wearing one type of metal as a rule? Presenting an arm laden with gold, silver, rose gold and platinum is a modern, sophisticated and gorgeous look - if it’s done right.

Here are our golden (and silver) rules to perfecting the mixed metals trend.

Keep it simple

Upping your mineral game means that you have to tone down the complexity of your jewellery and your outfit. If you are embracing a silver, gold, platinum and even rose gold look then try and keep the rest of your ensemble on the simple side.

The same applies to the style of your jewellery. Avoid anything too flashy or overpowering that could take the eye away from the changing hues in your accessories, after all you want to avoid looking like you’ve fallen into your jewellery box. A simple piece, such as this yellow and white gold anchor link bracelet, is a great way to ease yourself into the mixed-metal trend and create a modern and unique look.

Choose a central-coloured metal

While we don’t want to segregate your jewellery collection, in order to keep this trend looking classy you need to highlight a central metal theme and use the other jewellery tones as accents.

Pick your favourite colour and throw in pieces of different metals to accessorise the look. Silver is a safe option for a central theme as it is a cool-toned metal and therefore complements a number of skin tones. Your accent pieces should contrast with the silver and reveal hidden tones, so opt for metals like rose and yellow gold.

Stack your rings

One of the biggest trends right now is stacking jewellery.

Stack bracelets, necklaces and rings together to fashion different textures and give your outfits a little extra glamour and depth. What better way to kill two birds with one stone than by layering jewellery made from different metals together?

One of the easiest accessories to do this with is rings. Incorporate this trend into your daily ring wear by either rocking large statement rings on each hand, or adorning your fingers with a number of delicate rings.

Aim for simple designs and limit the use of different coloured jewels so it stays classic and chic. A fantastic look would be to use this diamond solitaire ring as the centrepiece, but then keep the rest of the rings as plain bands or wear a different style of diamond, such as this brilliant cut seven stone half diamond eternity ring, to keep the look fresh.
