The New Year is launched in style with the return of the British Fashion Council’s London Collection: Menswear show, running from the 9th to the 12th of January.

This staple of the menswear calendar will play host to a multitude of influential and first-time designers, flying the flag of innovation for the British fashion industry. Despite the event only being in its 6th season, it boasts an impressive global line-up, featuring renowned designers such as Tom Ford and Dr Martens, as well as premium British designers like Alexander McQueen, Barbour and Uniform Wares.

The week-long event will enable fashion onlookers to immerse themselves in the key trends that will be dominating men’s fashion over the next season, in a flurry of exciting live shows, presentations, receptions and talks with the designers.

Emphasis on accessories

You would be forgiven for thinking that clothes would take centre stage of the show, however, the collection has nearly as much exposure to men’s accessories as it does to the stylish garments on the models’ backs.

The history of male accessories is a rich and interesting one. From shiny brogues and military trench coats to luxury leather belts and of course the vintage watch - each era acquires an accessory to complement the modern man’s attire.

Recently, there has been something of a revival of the old-fashioned gentleman, with more men becoming interested in their grooming, tailoring and accessories. Watches have always been popular, but we are seeing the revival of more traditional smart apparel, such as pocket watches, brooches and luxurious (if a tad unnecessary) canes.

The previous Spring/Summer collection hosted rooms filled with glorious accessories; rows of polished leather shoes, beautifully-pressed silk ties and cases of enviable watches on display. We are expecting to witness an even more impressive array from the Autumn/Winter show this month.

Fresh British talent

Despite the impact made by the larger global designers, attention has been increasingly focused on the upcoming British innovators whose collections are brimming with creative talent. Audiences from across the globe have been drawn to the capital to cast their keen fashion eye on what delights Britain has to offer.

As mentioned, Uniform Wares is one of the featured designers of the event, and as an independent British luxury watchmaker, the company idealises the concept of the show completely. As discussed in our previous post, Uniform Wares has shot to fame in recent years, with its ultra-cool designs, high-quality manufacturing and affordable price tags making its items a must for any watch collection. It creates beautiful timepieces for men and women, both with the same sleek contemporary design unique to the brand.

The event includes a history and heritage section, exploring the influences that Britain has had on male attire. “Men going from strength to strength, this fascinating insight into the history of menswear is a timely reminder of why our city is the capital for men's clothing,” Boris Johnson stated in an interview with the British Fashion Council.

The next week or so could be very interesting and memorable for Britain’s legions of fashionistas.
