In a world of manufactured, mass-produced fashion, true luxury is hard to come by. From the exclusivity to the craftsmanship; it’s hard to pin down exactly what makes luxury fashion so desirable. Yet with many design houses pandering to high consumer demand, it seems that unique, luxury goods are becoming increasingly rare.

A new exhibit by the V&A museum in London will attempt to explore what we consider to be luxury in the modern world. Delving into the concept and culture of luxury produce, we can take a glimpse into what really makes these precious items so special.

Thinking about the industry as a whole, we’ll be able to see examples from fashion designers such as Iris van Herpen and British watchmaker George Daniels with his stunning collection of haute horology.

The excitement surrounding the exhibition - which starts next April - got us thinking; does luxury exist in the modern world? If so, has the concept evolved in any way?

Preserved in time

We often look upon our collection of vintage jewellery and watches as if they are preserved elements of luxury. Holding their value and grace over time is certainly one aspect that separates luxury items from run-of-the-mill pieces.

The history, the character and the opulent nature of vintage jewellery tells a tale of years gone by, giving us a clue as to what people found luxurious in the past. Previously, luxury was all about displaying your affluence when no one else could, it was understanding its cultural significance and appreciating the finer details of craftsmanship. For example, when you pick up a vintage Rolex wristwatch you’ll know you’re holding something that not many people have come across - you’ve stumbled upon something really special.

Yet, it could be argued that these items have been so well preserved due to the culture at the time. These days we want the latest gadgets and fashion items as soon as they’re out, completely disregarding our garments from the previous season. We’ve become dependent on disposable fashion and with that we’ve developed a nasty easy-come, easy-go attitude towards precious items.

Years ago, this would have been completely unheard of, even in homes of opulent excess. Hence why our precious jewels are so well preserved today.

‘Affordable luxury’

Many fashion houses now have high street ranges in an attempt to cater for the demand for disposable fashion, however we must remember this can impact their lasting quality. As such, you may need to reconsider your purchase if you’re looking for something you’re hoping to cherish over time.

Once upon a time, luxury was anything but affordable and that gave it an almost aspirational sense that anyone who couldn’t make a purchase at least had something to work towards.

These days our emphasis is on style and technology. You’ll notice precise movements and complex craftsmanship being regarded as check boxes for determining a modern luxury watch. Is it Swiss made? What is the strap made from? How wearable is this item and where does it fit into your life?

As an extension of who we are, luxury goods must embody a sense of affluence and intelligence. Whether that’s a vintage timepiece or a modern diamond ring, luxury jewellery is timeless no matter if its concept isn’t.
