The weather is becoming colder and the countdown for Christmas has become, which can only mean December is finally with us. Now that December is here, it means there is a new birthstone to discuss, whereas in this case – three. The three birthstones on topic this month are Tanzanite, Turquoise and Zircon, all of these beautiful stones embody a variety of different blues.

Key qualities of Tanzanite

Tanzanite is an exciting gemstone as it can only be sourced from one location in the world, making it unique and precious. The source of this gemstone is the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, making it extremely hard to come by. Tanzanite is a beautiful shade of velvety blue with a hint of magnificent purples, making this gemstone a true beauty.

Tanzanite comes in a variety of styles, shapes and colours. Pure blue stones are rare to come by, the majority of tanzanite comes in shades of purple. Large Tanzanite crystals are usually more  deeper shades of brilliant blue, which then dilute into purple the smaller the crystal becomes, the smallest of the stones being a purple as light as lavender.

Key qualities of Turquoise

Turquoise is one of the oldest to date gemstones, making its way through key point in history, ranging from Ancient Egyptians, Native America and to current day. Therefore this blue gemstone is now a popular choice and it is used with all types of jewellery for a variety of occasions.

Turquoise can be found in a vast amount of places such as Australia, South-Western America, France, Britain, Afghanistan, Tibet, Iran, China, Russia, Poland, Arabia, Peru & Mexico. These stones are usually opaque ranging from dark blue to a brilliant, bright blue with veins running through the stone. The stones veins range from colours such as black and brown to a yellow tinted colour.

Key qualities of Zircon

Zircon similarly to Tanzanite and Turquoise, is a brilliant shade of blue although it can be found in warmer colours such as green, dark red, yellow, brown and orange. The main source of Zircon is Sri Lanka, as well as Burma and Australia although this gemstone is extremely hard to come by.

This beautiful gemstone used to be one of the most common substitute for Diamonds and was also known as Matura diamond. The blue colour of Zircon is produced from heating brown Zircon gemstones, although only a small selection of brown Zircon has the components. The majority of this brown Zircon is found in the South East Asia, which shows why Cambodia or Burma has the highest volume of blue Zircon.
