In recent years, the UK has embraced the Black Friday phenomenon to kick off the final sprint towards Christmas. Every year we tell ourselves we’ll start preparing earlier and spread out the cost of Christmas, but in truth we never do. By the time Black Friday rolls around we’re half way down the aisles with whatever leftover gift boxes we can find, with at least 20 other relatives and friends still left to buy for.

Traditionally held after the American Thanksgiving holiday, Black Friday gives online retailers the opportunity to slash their prices and that’s exactly what we’re doing.
The day is notorious for creating complete chaos on the high street with the name originally being coined by police in Philadelphia in the 60s. They were completely rushed off their feet attempting to control the traffic jams and bustling pedestrian walk ways.
Bus drivers, taxi drivers and retailers struggled to keep up with the demand and the day was named ‘Black Friday’ to match the bleak mood of those retail staff who were working on the day. Retailers desperately tried to remove the negative connotations of the name by replacing the title with ‘Big Friday’, alas this did not take off.
In recent years, the busy crowds have not dissipated, if anything they’ve grown even more. By the time 12pm in the afternoon rolls around, the Black Friday shelves are almost bare, having been ransacked by people who queued in the early hours of the morning to make savings on their gifts.
