As vintage watch specialists, we have a passion for premium quality timepieces. Shining stainless steel bracelets, polished minute markers and water-resistant cases really are our forte here at William May.

But does the rest of the nation share our love for the classic watch?

According to our research, over 60% of people surveyed would prefer to wear a classic watch over a smartwatch. Despite the forthcoming release of Apple’s much-anticipated smartwatch, people would still rather opt for style over technology.

A traditional watch holds sentimental value, as they are pieces that can be treasured and inherited through generations, representing a snapshot of that period of time. A smartwatch may be able to tell you how many steps you’ve taken that day, or what the weather is going to do tomorrow - but it probably won’t be passed down to your grandchildren to carry on your legacy after you’ve gone.

For hundreds of years the watch has been a prestigious symbol of status. A watch is more than just a gadget that helps you stay organised, it represents power, achievement and class. The watch you choose to adorn instantly reveals more about your personality than you ever could have imagined, which is why it is crucial to get it right.

Gemma Johnson, CEO of myfamilyclub.co.uk, explained why she favours classic watches over new-fangled gizmos: "I'm a traditional timepiece woman. With technology comes many positives but also negatives such as the 'eroding' of family values as family members scuttle into their individual bubbles, absorbed by their smartphone, tablet etc."

“Learning to tell the time will be lost on the generations to come if as parents we don't set the right examples. Wearing a traditional timepiece should be celebrated. Off with the 'Apple Watch’s’ head I say."

Gemma was clearly not alone in her opinion, as many others who took part in the survey praised the staying power of classic watches designed by some of the world’s most esteemed watchmakers.

There are certain brands that have always known how powerful a watch can be, we have put together the ultimate list of status watches that are guaranteed to win over even the most techno-minded consumer.

The Tag Heuer Grand Carrera WAV511B watch is a perfect example of how simple style reigns supreme. The classic monochrome colours of the black leather strap against the white dial will stand the test of time, this watch is a true investment that you will find yourself reaching for year after year.

Smartwatches may have innovative features, but some traditional watches are just ultra-cool. Omega really hit the nail on the head when they created their Seamaster Aqua Terra watch, consisting of a stainless steel bracelet and case, and a black dial, this really is a piece that you’d want to show off.

Named “The Hulk” after its green-hued bezel and dial, this unique Rolex Submariner watch really will make its wearer feel they have superhuman powers. It has a stainless steel case typical of a classic Rolex, with an Oyster-style bracelet around the dial and bezel, and it is water resistant up to 300m, if you do fancy an underwater challenge.

If you are looking for a classic watch that you can dazzle people with, then look no further than the Omega Bi Metal Constellation watch. As one of the most prestigious watch brands around, this stainless steel vintage watch exudes Omega’s fine craftsmanship and detailed gold design.

As the results of our survey suggest, classic style never goes out of fashion.
